The 1st Team’s promotion to Alliance Division 1 means that Great Melton Cricket Club will begin their 40th Anniversary season with the club at it’s highest position since its formation in 1974. With the C Team also promoted to Norfolk League Division 3 – only one division behind the B Team – and the other two Saturday teams preserving their status, the captains were able to present positive reports at the club’s recent A.G.M.

With coaching numbers and the Women & Girls’ section at an all-time high, the U15s and U13s winning the South Norfolk Community League, the U13s reaching 2 County finals and the U13 Girls winning the Lady Taverners Tournament, the only real difficulties for the club in 2013 came on Sundays. Despite the success of a Sunday A side playing 6 Norfolk Friendly Alliance matches, the Mid Norfolk Sunday League team struggled in the Shield Premier Division where the standard was too high for the sort of side Melton were able to field most weeks. It was often a struggle to raise a team and Melton only avoided relegation when Great Witchingham called off the final match because of similar player shortages. With A Team skipper Lee Whiddett elected to captain the Sunday side and Neal Clarke as his administrative assistant, it was decided that Melton should continue to try to play competitive Sunday cricket but a request has gone to the League for the club to compete in a lower division where it will be easier to introduce youngsters.

The ‘feel-good factor’ also permeated through to the Treasurer, Grenville Ireland, who presented a optimistic statement of accounts, showing that the good summer of warm weather and the success of events like the Six-a-Side, Junior Festival and 100 Club had ensured the club made a better-than-expected healthy profit. It meant no increase in the current fees, the senior £35 subscription and £6 match fee still modest compared to many clubs.

There were few changes of captain for 2014 with Richard Waddell (1st Team), Lee Whiddett (A Team), Simon Carding (C Team) and Kevin Frazer (Sunday A Team) all re-elected. Tim Hales will lead the B Team while the Midweek duties will be shared by Waddell (Bernard Matthews Cup) and Chris Elliott (Wensum Cup). The Executive Committee was re-elected en-bloc but Chris Brook took over as Women & Girl’s Coordinator from Mark Cadge.

Chairman Steve Phoenix presented the Club Development Plan and outlined progress on a new three-lane practice net facility planned for Autumn 2014 while Neal Clarke presented the ideas of the newly-formed ‘Fundraising and Sponsorship’ Sub-Committee. A separate sub-committee may be formed to formulate plans for a celebration of the club’s 40 years in the late summer.

Officers elected were: President, Andy Seeley; Chairman & Junior Development Officer, Steve Phoenix; Secretary, Membership Secretary, Steve Clarke; John Burdett; Treasurer, Grenville Ireland; Welfare Officer, Celia Phoenix; Coaching Coordinator, Simon Carding; Groundsman, Mike Phoenix; Women & Girls Coordinator, Chris Brook; Captains, Richard Waddell (1st Team), Lee Whiddett (A & Sunday Team), Tim Hales (B Team), Simon Carding (C Team), Kevin Frazer (Sunday A), Waddell & Chris Elliott (Midweek); Junior Representatives: Hannah Brook & Chris Greenslade.
