Olly Black took 5-5 in 2 overs as Great Melton began their Zip League campaign with a 31-run victory over Old Buckenham.
In fact the Melton team delivered a polished demonstration of excellent bowling and fielding with all the bowlers keeping an accurate line and length. Five wickets lost for the first pair saw Old Buckenham reeling as Black and Becca Greenslade (0-7) bowled tightly. Cameron Graveling (2-5) and Olly Leinster 0-13) maintained the pressure and Buckenham were 130-7 at the end of 8 overs and still in deficit at 95. It was only their final two batsmen who managed to take the attack to Melton, adding a spirited 25 but Josh Wright (0-17) and Charlie Green (0-16) both bowled power play overs without conceding too many runs. A run-out meant Buckenham finished on 160-8 leaving Melton to score 121 to win.
Melton have generally performed better with the ball than bat in this competition, but, even so, this was going to be a difficult total for Bucks to defend. Melton’s reply was mature and composed; Rebecca and Josh ensured Melton were 7 ahead by the 4th over and the two Ollies added 25 to take the lead to 6 but, after a wicket in the 11th and Charlie & Cameron batting, Melton were only 9 to the good with the final power-play to come. There was to be no upset, however, as a flurry of extras, a few well-placed singles and some dogged defence, lifted any pressure from the final pair; the margin of 31 probably larger than they expected.
Old Buckenham 120 for 8 (extras 16). Gt.Melton 151 for 3 (extras 18). Gt.Melton won by 31 runs.
