GREAT MELTON U13s lost to MULBARTON U13s by 2 wickets at Melton Park in the South Norfolk Community League
With Fergus Hughes and Ryan Howard ‘loaned’ to the U15s who were playing Great Ellingham on the adjoining pitch, Melton’s understrength U13s lost their unbeaten South Norfolk Community League record to a good Mulbarton side. Although Tom Moye hit a six, his dismissal (for 13) and that of Matt Ling (for 7) saw Melton slump to 21-2. Only 10 runs were added in the next 4 overs as Craig Wilson and Finlay Hughes found opportunities limited by some accurate bowling. Both batsmen gradually found their touch, however, and Wilson hit some good shots in a best-ever score of 20 before being stumped. Hughes batted well for his 25 not out and Kyle Weston scored 6 at the end but credit to Mulbarton who restricted Melton to 85-3, a score that looked to be a little under-par. D.Phillips (3-1-15-2) and G.Pollack (3-0-16-1) were the Mulbarton wicket-takers.
Melton had to bowl and field well to defend their score – and they did – but they couldn’t remove Nathan Sharpe who batted for the entire innings for a well-made 37. Polack (16) and T.Osbourne (14) also made runs at the top of the order but, when 56-1 became 70-4 in the space of 3 overs, Melton sensed they were in with a chance. Spinner Tom Moye (2.2-0-16-2), Beth Harmer (2-1-3-0) and Kyle Weston (2-0-7-1) slowed up the flow of runs but Sharpe and Jack Broad saw Mulbarton home with 10 balls remaining.
