A hat-trick by U13s skipper, Tom Moye, was the highlight of the U13s 32-run victory at Mattishall in the Alan Bridgewater competition. Off-spinner Moye clean-bowled Westgate, Gagen and Chapman in successive balls in the 12th over to reduce a spirited Mattishall reply from 58-2 to 58-5. Despite an excellent innings by Ben Chapman, who scored 39 not out and had figured in a fine opening partnership of 43 with George Harrod (21), Melton were able to comfortably defend their total of 108-4. Moye ended up with figures of 3-0-15-3 and, along with Aimee Palmer (2-0-7-1) and Kyle Weston (1-0-3-1), bagged the wickets as Mattishall finished on 76-6 but an attack that included Craig Wilson, Patrick Walton, Fergus Hughes and Luke Richards proved just too accurate for the home side and Melton’s fielding was of a good standard.
Moye was not so impressive with the bat, being dismissed second ball as Melton produced a slightly below-par batting display, Nevertheless a good unbeaten 30 from Kyle Weston, 19 not out from Palmer and 15 from Hughes gave Melton a decent total to defend. As well as proving an accomplished batsman, Chapman was also Mattishall’s best bowler with 1-9 from his 3 overs although Westgate (3-1-10-1) also bowled well.
Kai Wilkinson-Loines performed admirably behind the stumps and, his emergence with that of Matt Carter, seems to have solved the U13s wicketkeeping problem.
