GREAT MELTON 1st TEAM (22 points) beat SWARDESTON A (4 points) by 7 wickets at Hilltops in the Norfolk Alliance Division 3
This was a victory over the elements just as much as it was over a Swardeston ‘A’ side who battled hard after losing what was always likely to be an important flip of the coin. The radar suggested that there would be heavy rain at about 3pm, and sure enough, it arrived right on cue. At the time, Melton’s attack had managed to achieve something of a stranglehold on the home side. However, Swardeston has started brightly and after 11 overs were 52 without loss, with Lewis Dorling second top scoring with 30. However, there followed a steady succession of wickets to leave the batting side 93 for 4 after 26 overs, which was to turn out to be the enforced early tea break. After the rain had subsided, Swardeston made it to 157 for 6 from their shortened 40 overs, with Alex Bilham left on 49 not out. Aaron Garner again excelled with 3 for 24 from 8 overs. 2 for 13 from the skipper’s 5 overs kept the home side under control in the latter stages.
Melton got to their total with little drama, which was a relief after recent batting travails. Both Ben (38) and Sam Mann (38 not out) batted intelligently and with great timing to move the score along, by this time in glorious sunshine again. Sam was to hit the inning runs with 8 overs still remaining. If Melton can manage a strong finish to the end of the season, the promise of promotion stills remains.
