Great Melton ground out a last-gasp victory in their second Zip League game against Norwich. With Melton still 23 runs adrift with just 2 overs remaining, Norwich seemingly had the game won but too many ‘extras’ and a ’12’ from last pair Charlie Green & Cameron Graveling in the 11th over – the second ‘power play’ over – saw Melton edge ahead, leaving Graveling to block out the final few deliveries as Melton won by 4 runs.
Once again Melton had excelled with the ball, restricting Norwich to 178-6, a net total of 148. Rebecca Greenslade (2-0-14-2), Ollie Black (2-0-15-0), Oli Leinster (2-0-12-0), Kai Wilkinson-Loines (2-1-22-0) and, especially, Cameron Graveling (2-0-6-1) and Charlie Green (2-0-9-1) bowled an excellent line and length with Kai and Charlie giving little away in the ‘power play’ overs. There was a good catch from Kai while Charlie played a part in two run-outs.
The real difference between the sides was that Melton only gave away 4 runs in extras – 1 wide and 1 no ball whereas Norwich conceded 36.
Unfortunately Melton’s batting didn’t reach the high standards of their bowling. Rebecca and Kai were steady in taking the score to 116-0 including the only boundary of innings from Becca . The two Ollies struggled though, adding just 4 in 4 overs, losing 2 wickets, one a powerplay run out, leaving last pair Cameron & Charlie to score 29 to win. Two early wickets put them up against it but their determination saw them through as the pressure affected the Norwich bowlers. The batting was a little tentative allowing Norwich to bowl too many ‘dot balls’ but that will undoubtedly improve with practice.
The narrow victory made it two wins out of two for Melton but there will be tougher tests to come against the likes of Topcroft, Tas Valley and Ellingham.
