Great Melton went in to their final league fixture of the season against Sprowston ‘A’ knowing that victory would assure them the division 3 title, but as it turned out with Swardeston’s final game against lowly Ashmanhaugh falling victim to the weather, whatever the outcome Melton were guranteed to finish at the top of the division.
Sprowston won the toss and elected to field but shortly after the start heavy showers caused a lengthy break in play. By the time the ground was fit for resumption, the 2 captains agreed that there was insufficient time to conclude the match so started a new one of 60 overs. Melton won this toss and elected to field and in helpful conditions David Bunn and Mark Scott made batting difficult for the Sprowston batsman. Bunn made the break through and when Mark Scott bowled Sprowston Captain Liam Palmer, the momentum was firmly with the champions elect.
Poor weather was always likley to have the final say to the 2011 season and although Melton managed to reduce Sprowston to 103 for 7 from 29 overs, heavy rain brought an end to play. Mark Scott was the pick of Melton’s bowlers taking 3 for 20 but there were 2 wickets for Dave Bunn and 1 each for Ollie Harris and Michael Sibert.
Back to back divisional titles is an excellent achievement and demonstrates the club’s strength in depth througout all of the senior cricket sides.
