Matt joined the club in 2007, having moved to Norfolk. He already had a link with Great Melton as he married Vice-Presidents’ Alan and Kate Barnard’s granddaughter, Maxine. A useful left-handed batsman and right-arm bowler, Matt had plenty of experience of club cricket but it took him a little while to find his feet and his batting never really got going in his first season. After starting in the A Team, he dropped down to the B Team where he proved his worth as a bowler, taking 16 wickets to help the Bs to 3rd place in the league. After several seasons away from cricket to spend more time working and with his young family, Matt returned to the club when Ethan, Corey and now Niamh attended our junior coaching. Almost immediately Matt began assisting Guy McCurley with the U9s and, having completed his Level 2 Coaching qualification, he moved up with Corey – who has been selected for Norfolk U10s – to the U11s group. Ever-willing to help out with warm-ups, scoring or umpiring and, with Max having taken on managing the U11s, the Rushtons are a real asset to the club. As an additional bonus Matt seems to have found his cricket gear and, having been tempted back to playing again by appearing in Last Man Standing in 2015, he made a welcome return to regular action last season, scoring 160 runs and taking 12 wickets, mainly for the B Team. He must have enjoyed it because this year he’s taken on the captaincy!
