Head of Junior Coaching; ECB Level 2 Coach; Executive Committee, Senior, Junior & Coaching Sub-Committee Member; Left-hand batsman; Right-arm seam bowler
Matt joined Great Melton in 2007, having moved to Norfolk. A useful left-handed batsman and right-arm bowler, Matt had plenty of experience of club cricket and initially he proved his worth as a B Team bowler, taking 16 wickets to help the Bs to 3rd place in the league. After several seasons away from cricket to spend more time working and with his young family, Matt returned to the club when first Ethan, then Corey and finally Niamh began attending our junior coaching. Matt began assisting Guy McCurley with the U9s and, having completed his Level 2 Coaching qualification, he moved up with Corey – who had been selected for Norfolk U10s – to the U11s group. Ever-willing to help out with warm-ups, scoring or umpiring and, with Max having taken on managing the U11s, the Rushtons began to become more and more involved with the club. As an additional bonus Matt found his cricket gear and, having been tempted back to playing again by appearing in LMS in 2015, he made a welcome return to regular action in 2016. After two difficult years captaining a B team largely shorn of regular experienced players in 2018-19 Matt stepped aside to take on the role of Head of Junior Coaching. His innovative approach, meticulous attention to detail and command of ICT and social media means he, together with Maxine, has brought about significant changes to the way things are done at Great Melton. Unfortunately the Coronavirus has rather scuppered his well-prepared coaching blueprint for 2020. As a player Matt still has plenty to offer. He was B Team Player-of-the-Year in 2018 and the leading wicket-taker and 2nd highest run scorer last season.
