Great Melton u9s 366/3 (354 net) beat Garboldisham 266/14 (210 net) by 144 runs at Gerboldisham in the John Dewing Competition.
Despite cold and windy conditions at Garboldisham, GMCC u9s kept the small crowd of dedicated parents and siblings warm with some entertaining cricket. After the home side opted to field Poppy Bugg and Niamh Rushton opened the batting with some nice stroke play scoring steady singles and Poppy setting the target for all to follow with a nice boundary. Alice Brand (11) then continued the good scoring being backed up well by Danny Wright (7) who scored a four from his first ball. Jack Joice and William Joyner hit a boundary each before the partnership of George Alcock and Callum Marchant really set pulses alight with George hitting a blistering 45 runs including nine 4s and a 6 to set the home side a mammoth 354 runs to chase.
Jack opened the bowling and was the first to make a break through bowling a Garboldisham opener in his second over. Alice likewise beat the defence of the other opening bat to claim the second wicket. Callum keeping wicket for the first time was excellent behind the stumps and this gave the Melton bowlers the confidence to express themselves. Danny bowled with good economy but it was his throw that forced a run-out for the third. Garboldisham’s young batsmen showed excellent spirit and some good flair hitting some nice boundaries but further wickets for William and Poppy restricted their advance. The closing two bowlers of Niamh (2/7) and George (5/8) bowled with great accuracy, George taking five-for with the last ball of the evening meant the team had a good night with both bat and ball. Although the wickets tumbled somewhat it didnt knock the spirit of the Garboldisham team and a great game was enjoyed by all. Well done to all players.
