The final game of Great Melton’s junior fixture programme saw the U13s round-off their season with a 70-run victory at Rocklands. Captain-for-the-day George Woodcock won the toss and elected to bat and it was George who led the way with an excellent 33 before retiring. He added 44 for the first wicket with Daniel Graves (11) before Odin Thomas joined him. The score raced along and, once George had departed, Odin too reached the agreed retirement score of 32 allowing more of his teammates an opportunity to bat. In the end they all did! Will Bailey added a good 10 and Adithya Velu was unbeaten on 5 but both George Ryan and Oliver Wormstone fell in successive balls for ducks as Amos Coates took 2-22. Harry Cheal prevented the hat-trick and was still there at the end with 1 as Melton totalled an impressive 149-4, helped by a generous portion of extras – 57!

Daniel Graves struck an early blow for Melton bowling Rocklands’ skipper Amos Coates for 4 but Fred Garrod came in and smashed two beautifully-timed sixes and two fours to briefly threaten. Once George Ryan had bowled the talented Menuka Jayakody for 19 and Harry Cheal had similarly removed Garrod for 24, the home side collapsed and were all out for 79 in the 14th over. George Ryan took 2-6, Harry 2-18, Oli 1-3 and Daniel 1-9. An excellent catch behind by Odin and one at mid-wicket by Adithya completed a good performance epitomised by the final wicket – a run out involving Daniel and Odin.

George captaining Melton for the first time, did very well. It was a good end to the season for the U13s who won 10 of their 17 completed matches. Thank you to Maxine and Matt Rushton who have done their usual excellent job managing & coaching the team.
