Melton girls were victorious on Saturday in the hardball festival at Langley Prep School. The team, consisting of Alice Brand, Connie Leinster, Niamh Rushton, Rebecca Davey, Freya Ballam, Hope Buxton, Imogen Cook and Samia Mohammed, played 3 and won 3 in a great day of cricket at Taverham Hall.
They won their first match convincingly against Langley Prep taking 8 wickets and restricting the opposition to a net score of 243. The pick of the bowlers was Hope with 4 wickets but there was 2 wickets for Niamh, 1 for Imogen and a run out for Connie. They all batted very sensibly and ended on a net score of 299 after losing only 1 wicket. A fabulous cover drive for 4 runs by Niamh off the final ball summed up a great innings.
The second game against Brooke was a greater test for the girls. 2 wickets for Alice and one for Hope, Niamh, Connie and Samia (the latter being an excellent catch by Rebecca behind the stumps) meant that Brooke finished on a net score of 259. Again the team batted sensibly to keep the loss of wickets down and the girls ended up winning by 7 runs.
The third game against Horsford was the decider with both teams having won their previous 2 matches. Alice won the toss for the third time in a row and the girls again went into the field. An excellent display of batting and bowling, with 11 wickets shared around including 4 run outs, meant that the girls were chasing their largest total of 266 for victory. Some great shots coupled with 6 wickets for the first 3 pairs left the final pair of Niamh and Alice needing 37 runs from their 4 overs. An early wicket meant that 5 was added to the chase but some super shots for 4, some quick singles and the added benefit of a few extras saw the girls over the line winning by 2 runs.
An excellent day’s cricket with great support from the Melton parents. Well done to everyone involved and thank you to Langley Prep for hosting.
