In an exciting climax to this match at Mattishall, the home team needed just 2 runs to win off the last ball. Jackson Benton bowled a good length ball which was firmly struck, but he dived to his left restricting the batters to just one run. With this superb fielding, Gt Melton under 7s tied their first-ever match.
Put into bat, Gt Melton openers Blade Earley and George Alcock got the innings off to a good start. Blade hit some powerful shots, scoring 8 not out. Noah Moore, Oscar Leivers and Jackson batted with concentration. Their running between the wicket was noteworthy and they provided stout resistance against the accurate bowling by Mattishall. The final pair of Nicholas Conway and Jake Canning pushed the score along. Jake scored 4 not out and despite being bowled twice, Nicholas went on to score 6. James Alcock hit a spectacular 13 not out. The innings closed on 155 for 3 a net score of 140.
Gt Melton took the field and with the first ball Blade bowled the opening batter. Noah also took a wicket. The Mattishall batters played some powerful shots but the impressive fielding by all the Gt Melton players restricted their score. Jake, James, George and Noah were very energetic in the field. Blade took a catch and ran out two batters with accurate throwing at the stumps. Nicholas and Oscar bowled accurately as the home team looked to be closing in on a win. With the excitement building, Jackson stepped up to bowl the final over and restricted the free scoring batters to end the match as a tie, both teams finishing with 140. A fitting finish to such a friendly and well contested match.
