Last Saturday a combined team largely made up of B and C Team players enjoyed the usual convivial pre-season friendly at Eaton. The home side totalled 224-5, thanks mainly to two major contributions, one being from last year’s Division 3 batsman-of-the-year Sam Butcher. The Melton bowlers toiled in the warm sunshine as skipper Woody Loines ensured all of them had a decent run-out before the league season started. Kyle Mason was the pick with figures of 7-1-10-0 with very few of those coming off the bat but Joe Bickel (7-0-42-1) and Chris McKay (3-0-8-0) also bowled well. Daniel Hayward (10-1-43-0) bowled a good opening spell but was less effective in his second spell, while Rob Sims had, for him, an off-day with figures of 8-0-56-1. Jake Mardell (8-1-57-1) and Martyn Cook (2-0-14-1) ended up with a wicket apiece.
Melton’s reply started reasonably well before James Dorling (14) went lbw. Debutant Chris McKay then hit some excellent shots in his breezy 19 before lofting an attempted drive to mid-off. Loines (20) and Martyn Cook (2) fell in quick succession to leave Melton struggling at 64-4 before a partnership of 69 between Jon Moxon (43) and Steve Phoenix (31) put Melton back on course. Both fell, however, to the wily slow bowling of evergreen David Trett who went on to take 4 wickets. Sims hit a quick 13 but the ‘tail’ all fell for single figures as Melton were bowled out for 190 to give Eaton victory by 34 runs.
Sorry for the lack of detail – I don’t have the scorebook!
