Topcroft vs Great Melton 1st XI
On an over cast day at topcroft Melton lost the toss and were asked to bat first in favourable bowling conditions.
Melton Opened the innings with Greenslade (14) and Whiddett (8) looking fairly comfortable against the moving new ball until Rostron (4-38) brought a delivery back into Whiddett trapping him LBW with the score on 18. Pearse joined Greenslade at the crease however their partnership was short lived as Greenslade showed a little inexperience attempting to drive a full straight delivery from Rostron down the ground and was bowled, this followed Greenslade having played the previous ball nicely to the cover point boundary for 4 with the score at 29. Sam Mann rejoining Melton from Old Bucks joined Pearse, batting in place of the late running Richard Wood (is Topcroft near Saham Toney Woody?) and was soon knocking it around fairly easily until he pulled a delivery from Goodfellow to the boundary – only to hit his own wicket with his bat and was out for 5, the score on 61. During this period Pearse had started to find his stride among the wide deliveries being sent down by the opposition change bowlers and as he latched onto a short delivery he managed to pick the only fielder on the boundary, out caught off the bowling of Edge for 15. Woody(3) and Melton Debutant Dave Maskell (0) were both seen off LBW to the returning opening Bowler and opposition skipper Todd in quick succession to leave Melton reeling at 83-6. Cook and Harris were left with 25 overs to rebuild the Melton Innings, and in typical Chefy Fashion Cook took the attack to the hardened division one Topcroft Bowlers, taking 14 boundaries including a dead straight 6 that bounced back off the sight screen. Cook and Harris put on 53 for the 7th wicket before Harris played an uncharacteristic lofted drive to mid off for 6. Waddell came and went without troubling the scorers LBW to Rostron. Gristwood provided useful support to the Chefy show until Cook missed a straight delivery giving Rostron his fourth wicket of the day, out for a entertaining and valuable 74. Farmer joined Gristwood and added 2 more runs for the final wicket when Gristwood was caught off the bowling of Edge for 6. Melton All out for 180 from 45 Overs. Extras (47) was the second highest contributor to the Melton innings.
Topcrofts response started slowly with Waddell and Harris bowling a tight opening 6 overs, Harris making the initial break through when Windgridge was caught by Gristwood running backwards taking an excellent catch at mid off for 9. 2 overs later Waddell then bowled Baldwin leaving Topcroft on 32-2 from 8 overs. At this point the skippers fears regarding the reintroduction of the legside wide rule in Div one and the Prem were realised, with the ball swinging and a left right combination batting for topcroft the Melton Bolwers started to struggle to keep a constant line. As the extras started to accumulate the pressure was released on the topcroft batsmen who didn’t have to take any risks. Gristwood had replaced Harris and had Todd Caught on the Crease LBW for 21 in his forth over. Farmer replaced Waddell from the other end and was unfortunate not to find another break through. Topcroft moved the score from 69-3 when Todd was out to 135- without really playing many shots. Edge at one point having accumulated 7 from about 20 overs! Eventually another breakthrough came when Goodfellow was caught at slip at the 4th attempt by Pearse off Harris for39 with the score on 136, Edge soon followed caught behind again off Harris for 22 (in 25overs), Holmes soon followed bowled Farmer for 4 but with time and wickets on there side topcroft got over the line in 46overs 6 wickets down.
On a day when Melton made their Division one Debut, we gave a decent account of ourselves but showed our inexperience with bat and ball, losing wickets to loose shots, not batting our overs out and bowling too many wides (48) however as the season continues I have no doubt that we will be able to compete with all of the sides in this division.
